A Heartfelt and Joyful Wedding at Meade Hall, Surrey

This was honestly one of my favourite weddings of the year, filled with warmth, laughter, and so many meaningful details. The couple’s vision was beautifully simple: a day that felt “old and English,” full of heart, and completely personal. With guests flying in from Australia, South Africa, America, and across Europe, they wanted to give everyone a taste of traditional English charm and Meade Hall in Surrey was the perfect choice.

As a female documentary wedding photographer, I couldn’t have loved this wedding more the history, the intimacy, and the emotion of the day came together perfectly, creating so many beautiful, candid wedding moments to photograph.  And of course it reminds me of my African roots!“

Choosing the Venue

From the very start, the couple knew they wanted something quintessentially English and Meade Hall, a stunning medieval barn, ticked every box. They loved its rustic beams, rich history, and cosy atmosphere. Located next to one of their favourite pubs (famous for its food!), it was a no-brainer.

They also chose to marry in their local church, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, bringing that traditional English feel they’d both envisioned. Between the two venues, they created a day that was warm, intimate, and steeped in history a true reflection of who they are.

A Touch of History,  St Peter’s Church, Farnborough

Before heading to their beautiful Meade Hall wedding reception, the couple exchanged vows at the historic St Peter’s Church in Farnborough, part of the Diocese of Guildford. This charming church, with its soft stone walls and centuries-old atmosphere, was the perfect backdrop for such a meaningful ceremony.

There has likely been a church on this site since Saxon times, and parts of the current building date back to around 1180. The north and west walls, along with the distinctive Norman north doorway, are among the oldest surviving features. Over the years, St Peter’s has been lovingly extended and restored, with additions in the 15th century, a Victorian-era chancel (1886), and further enhancements in the early 1900s that blend beautifully with the medieval core.

One of the most fascinating parts of the church’s story came to light in the 1980s, when conservators rediscovered a remarkable set of 13th-century wall paintings on the north wall. Believed to be the work of artists from the Winchester School, the paintings depict St Eugenia, St Agnes, and St Maria (Mary Magdalene). Originally uncovered in the Victorian period, they were carefully re-exposed in 1986, revealing exquisite detail that had been hidden for centuries. During the same restoration, several medieval consecration crosses were also found on the west wall, subtle marks where candles once burned during the church’s dedication services long ago.

As a female documentary wedding photographer, I love photographing ceremonies in historic spaces like this. There’s something truly special about the blend of ancient architecture and modern love stories, the way the light falls through centuries-old windows, the hush of the stone walls, and the quiet sense of continuity that only a place like St Peter’s can hold.

Together, St Peter’s Church and Meade Hall’s medieval barn offered the perfect combination of English heritage and warm intimacy, a dream setting for a Surrey wedding full of character, laughter, and heartfelt emotion.

What Part of the Wedding Process Were You Most Excited About?

Like many couples, they found planning a little stressful, but from the start, they were confident about two things: their venue and their photographer. (Always music to my ears as a Hampshire wedding photographer!)

They decided to take on their own flowers and decorations, not really knowing how it would turn out, but it came together beautifully with the help of friends. Their bouquet was made just the day before, using greenery from the Netherlands and silk proteas as a nod to the Joanne’s South African roots.

The highlight? Welcoming friends and family from all over the world. “It was so special to have everyone here to celebrate with us,”  and you could truly feel that joy throughout the day.

The Proposal

Craig proposed on a beach in Carnac, France, one of their favourite places to visit. It’s a spot that reminds Joanne of her home in Cape Town, and the proposal couldn’t have been more perfect, simple, heartfelt, and completely them.

In true romantic fashion, Craig had already asked her parents for permission on a Zoom call a few weeks earlier. Joanne laughs as she remembers, “My mum burst into tears and shouted yes before he’d even asked!”

Choosing the Date

They chose their wedding date to ensure the bride’s brother could fly in from Australia, but in a lovely twist of fate, it ended up being Craig’s parents’ wedding anniversary too. A sweet coincidence that made the day even more meaningful.

Finding the Dress

“All the things I thought I wanted went out the window when I found my dress,” Joanne said with a laugh.

She brought her mum and five friends along for a day of dress shopping and though it felt like a big group at moments, it turned out to be exactly what she needed. “They all cried when I stepped out in ‘the one’,” she said. “Sometimes your friends know you better than you know yourself!”

The Wedding Style

Craig’s sister helped him choose a navy blue suit (Joanne’s favourite colour on him), paired with green accents to complement their greenery-based theme. Because Joanne is allergic to pollen, the couple opted for artificial greenery and silk flowers, including silk proteas, again representing her South African heritage.

The result? A stunning, organic feel that brought the outside in, perfectly matching the English countryside aesthetic of Meade Hall.

Personal Touches

This couple’s day was bursting with personality and charm. They incorporated proteas from Cape Town, a symbol of home, alongside a quirky and meaningful tiger theme that popped up everywhere, from inflatables and cake toppers to handmade tiger masks on the dance floor!

“Tigers are special in our household,” Joanne explained. “Our boys had tiger toys when they were little, and it just became a bit of a family thing, so we had to include them.”  They certainly were a great hit on the dance floor.

Funny & Memorable Moments

One of the sweetest moments came during the ceremony, when Craig accidentally said “I will” before the minister had even finished speaking! The congregation erupted in laughter and it instantly broke the ice.

Later, during the speeches, Joanne’s mum kept interrupting her dad, a running joke in their family that had everyone laughing (including him!). The day went off without a hitch, the rain held off, and everything unfolded perfectly.

Favourite Wedding Photo

Their favourite image from the gallery is full of joy the two of them laughing together on the dance floor, Craig with a tiger mask tucked into his suit pocket. It captures everything the day stood for: happiness, love, and the pure fun of celebrating with the people who matter most.

As a candid wedding photographer, these are the moments I treasure most the laughter, connection, and emotion that make every wedding completely unique.

Advice for Newly Engaged Couples

Their advice is spot on:“Do it your way. You don’t have to follow traditions if they don’t feel right for you. Focus on what truly matters, each other. Pick a great venue, outfits that make you feel amazing, and a talented photographer you trust. Everything else will fall into place.”

They also proved that a magical wedding doesn’t need to cost the earth their celebration cost around half the local average, and was every bit as special. With a little creativity and help from loved ones, they created a day that was not only beautiful but also stress-free and full of meaning.

This wedding was a joy to capture from start to finish, full of heart, laughter, and history. As a Surrey wedding photographer, I love documenting days like this: relaxed, meaningful celebrations where every detail has a story behind it.

Here’s the lovely Google Review Joanne left for me:

‘Choosing Myriame to photograph our wedding was one of the best choices we made. We had family and friends coming in from across the world and so capturing moments between us (when we see each other so rarely) was really important. We’ve just been through our gallery and are absolutely delighted! Not only did she capture all the big moments beautifully but she spotted all the little moments too. Her eye for capturing emotion at just the right time, is superb. We couldn’t be happier with the results – and we thoroughly enjoyed spending the day with Myriame. She calmed me before I walked down the aisle, offered loads of advice in the weeks before (even helping us unknot our wedding day schedule when we got a bit muddled) and added to all the fun and joy around us. Our guests loved her too. Thank you so much Myriame – we couldn’t be happier – we are so grateful for your creativity, friendliness and professionalism!’
