Engaged? Now What! A Helpful Guide to What to Do Once You’re Engaged
First of all a huge congratulations! 🎉 Getting engaged is such an exciting, significant event, but once the celebrations calm down, it’s completely normal to start wondering… what happens next?
If you’re newly engaged and feeling a little overwhelmed, don’t worry, you’re not alone. This guide walks you through what to focus on first so you can enjoy this special time while laying the foundations for a relaxed and well-planned wedding.

1. Take Time to Enjoy Being Engaged
Before diving into planning, pause and soak it all in. Share the news with family and friends, celebrate together, and enjoy this chapter it passes so quickly.
You might want to:
-
Announce your engagement, have an engagement party
-
Celebrate with loved ones
-
Take a few photos or book an engagement shoot
2. Talk About Your Vision as a Couple
Before looking at venues or suppliers, talk about how long you want your engagement to be and then move on to what you both want your wedding to feel like.
Think about:
-
Style (relaxed, elegant, rustic, modern, intimate)
-
Season and atmosphere
-
Guest numbers
-
What truly matters to you both
This keeps planning aligned and stress-free.
3. Think About Your Story
This is something many couples forget early on, but it becomes incredibly useful later especially for your wedding, stationery, ceremony, and when working with your photographer, vicar or celebrant.
Talk about:
-
How you met
-
What you love doing together
-
What makes your relationship unique
-
What you want your wedding day to reflect about you
Making notes now makes later writing feel much easier and more meaningful.
4. Set a Rough Budget
A budget gives you clarity and helps guide your decisions. It doesn’t need to be exact just realistic and comfortable.  I offer flexible payment plans to help you budget for your big day.
Decide what matters most to you and prioritise accordingly.
5. Choose Your Date or Season
Think about:
-
Favourite time of year
-
Weather preferences
-
Important dates for family, especially if families are travelling from countries outside of the UK.
Flexibility often helps with availability and cost.
6. Book Your Venue
Your venue shapes your day and sets the tone for your entire wedding. Once it’s booked, everything else becomes easier. Remember some venues, during peak summer, can book up very quickly, so always worth bearing that in mind when you plan your wedding date. Take your time to visit different venues, go to venue open days and give yourselves time to get ‘a feel for the venue’. Consider accommodation, parking and ease of access for your guests. Does the venue have a wedding planner who will guide you through the process and be there on the day? If you are planning a church wedding, remember to build in travel times between the church and the venue. You may need to consider transportation for guests and hence build this into the budget.

7. Book Key Suppliers Early
Popular suppliers book up quickly, especially for peak dates.
Focus on:
-
Photographer, documentary or candid styles or posed, editorial
-
Videographer, ceremony and speeches or all day
-
Florist, consider natural flowers or artificial silk
-
Caterer, if not supplied by the venue
-
Entertainment
Choose people whose style and approach you truly connect with.
8. Consider an Engagement Photo Shoot
An engagement shoot helps you:
-
Feel relaxed in front of the camera
-
Get to know your photographer
-
Create beautiful images before the wedding
-
Build confidence for the big day
It’s also a lovely way to mark this chapter of your lives.

9. Start a Simple Planning System
Whether digital or handwritten, keep everything in one place:
-
Budgets and payments
-
Ideas and inspiration
-
Guest lists and addresses
-
Supplier contacts
10. Remember — This Is About You
Advice will come from everywhere, but the most important thing is that your wedding reflects:
-
Your personalities
-
Your relationship
-
What feels meaningful to you
There’s no right or wrong just what’s right for you.
